Ah! Superhuman ladies !

I am writing this short and quick post being unable to contain the sheer amazement I had had last night. It has completely baffled me, and doesn't seem humanly possible, at least from my experience.

The cold outside is brutal, or rather, was more brutal yesterday than today. Although the actual temperature was consistently around -10 to -14 degree celcius, but the nasty wind blowing at 25-30 km/hour makes one's skin perceives an even colder temperature, often referred to as the 'feels like temperature' as can be seen in weather.com ... it was 'feels like -17 to -20 degree celcius' outside (weather.com). It was punishingly cold without any exaggeration. I had lost my nice gloves a few days ago (stupid me!), and thus I was forced to carry the carry-out bag from Raising Canes with my bare hand sans gloves at 1 am in the night. I used each of my hands alternately to hold the bag for a 30-second period for the 5-min walking distance while keeping the other hand inside my pocket. By 30 seconds, my hand would start paining ridiculously as if pricked by needles and any longer than it, the pain crosses all limits and makes it feel totally numb.. I feared some kind of frost bite might perennially damage my hand.. so yes, left hand 30 seconds outside, then right hand, then left hand.. until I reached my friend's car. I really need to buy a pair of new gloves. Phew! The nose already felt like a piece of stone sticking to my head...freaking madness outside...

Holy cow!..on the streets, walking back and forth near the pubs and bars especially, I could see many ladies, it being a Friday night, that wasn't unnatural. But wait, how is it that they are walking with just a short skirt and a half-sleeved top, and with absolutely nothing ? No jacket, no sweater, no muffler, no cap... the thin spaghetti tops and a short skirt - that's it ! Almost the whole body is exposed to the brutal cold outside ! I mean, something like more than 60% of their body surface is exposed to 'feels like -20 degree celcius' outside ! Not one of two, but many many ladies...holy God ! what's going on man ? I know there's something called 'Fashion above comfort' which is okay.. I mean, at near zero degree Celcius, you walk with a bare minimum of clothes is still logically graspable. I myself sometimes just wear a thin sweat-shirt at close to zero degree.... but 'feels like -20 deg' is really, really brutal... It is no longer about 'comfort' anymore, it's the human body breaking down and getting damaged at -20 degree Celcius...God, my hands experienced infinite pain if exposed for 30 seconds... these ladies are walking around the streets with just a spaghetti top and a short skirt... they did seem to walk steadily and normally which made me guess most of them were probably not 'totally drunk', so they were in their senses I guess.

So are those ladies blessed with some rare genes or something like that, which enable them to withstand -20 degree Celcius in bare minimum clothes. They didn't look like impoverished and poor enough that they wouldn't be able to buy clothes, rather they were wearing sparkling/expensive-looking clothes (although barely). It's NOT fashion anymore, it's about fundamental biology of the human body that I am talking about now, the fundamental heat-cold bearing abilities developed by homo sapiens over tens of thousands of years of evolution. These ladies just defied it ! I am amazed. If they have some special genes etc., can we probably clone or engineer those genetic make-up and distribute it to people around? The winter-wear/warm-cloth industry would then go bankrupt, for nobody would need any jacket or sweat-shirt or scarf. Our expenses will come down a lot, we won't need heaters in our homes and offices and we can save billions of dollars worth energy resources ! People exploring Antarctica wouldn't need to put on thick gears, but just go to the south pole in jeans and T-shirts ! Wow...

Blabbers on a Friday (late) night Or Random s**t thoughts crossing an idle mind

[Disclaimer: I do not own the copyright of the images below. They are obtained by randomly 'google searching'.] It’s another Friday night of the month, late night actually. It’s almost 1:30 am (and so it’s actually Saturday). And I am sober. Friday night, to most people, is the most awaited moment of the week. Why? Of course man! It’s the threshold of the highly anticipated weekend of relaxation, of spending more time with friends and family and of course of not having to deal with words like ‘boss’ or managers! Besides, who loves Monday mornings? Monday mornings are the gateways to a long week of work! And that sucks, doesn’t it? Hence, Friday nights are the times when undergrads party hard with beer, girls (for straight guys) and loud music that will probably crack the sky! Friday nights are when typical grad students seep a beer or two at a bar complaining how frustrating PhD life can be.  And I am sitting in my apartment, having finished watching ‘Love Aaj K

Sleepless nights, endless thoughts

(I wrote parts of it in February, parts of it in March, and the last part in April. So, when I say 'last month', it may mean Jan/Feb/March! As usual, grammatical bugs & typos may please be excused.) Moran is a small town in Assam, split between Sibsagar and Dibrugarh districts. It lies on the primary national highway NH-37 that runs through the state of Assam like its spinal cord.  About a month back, in the soft sunshine of a late February morning at Moran, as I was inclining against a white Toyota Innova decorated with flowers, an elderly person in his 60s approached me in his rather simple attire. I was part of a bride's envoy that was cruising between two districts separated by 7 hours' of road trip on either side of the mighty Brahmaputra, the bride in this case being my (cousin) sister. She was going to be dropped off at her in-law's place, a classic 'bride adieu' trip in our culture. The envoy had stopped at Moran to get tea and snacks, and our cu
Board Toppers, IIT-JEE toppers & personal reflections [Oh No! Not another blog on IIT-JEE, please!] In the recent past, I’ve come across many blogs (besides debates in TV channels, newspapers, etc.) on why not to scrap the existing IIT-JEE, and a few blogs on why to support the change. These blogs are written by intellectuals and academicians of the highest caliber including professors of IIT (and other institutes), IIT alumni, present IIT students, etc. etc. and are being ‘hotly’ followed in terms of follow-up comments, debates, discussions.   I am the most unworthy person in terms of trying to write a blog on it, firstly because, I did not study in an IIT (I even failed to clear the then-existing screening test J ) and secondly, since I never studied in an IIT and do not know the level of teaching and student quality (both must be very high, I believe), hence I cannot comprehend what changes – positive or negative – the proposed change in the exam might bring i
